GREGG DAVID WENZEL
COLORS POEM

I did not know you.
But, of course, I did.
And I know the adrenaline,
The anxiety and the airy calm
As you moved through the darkness
In electric invisibility.
We do what we do
Because it matters;
But in the doing, we are living
Life in brighter colors
And - even in the blackest African night -
I know you saw them swirling in the distance.
You were honored and alive.
They tell me you joined the Game late
But that your were already on the varsity squad,
That you were an only son,
That your parents had your picture on the mantle,
In the place of honor -
Even before you fell.
So, brother, sleep well.
We will chase the colors for you
Long into the night,
Knowing that your are there
In electric invisibility.
